  3. Cool, I'm also in your adult fiction group! Just for discussion's sake, it feels like most fantasy authors are doing YA because it's getting so much attention lately, and it seems like the books are easier to sell, or at least get more publicity. Why did you choose adult fantasy instead of YA?

For me, it's mostly that my characters are well into their 20s and 30s, and are often in adult decisions, regarding things like marriage instead of prom. I also feel like adult fiction needs some younger, brighter voices out there, you know? I mean, as a teenager, I read books meant for adults. There used to not even BE a YA genre. Also, it seems like a vast amount of YA readers ARE adults, and I wonder if it's just the simpler writing style, and exciting stories that draw them more than 17-year-old MCs.

    You?

    1. Hi Christine!

Thanks for your comment. I completely agree with you that a lot of fantasy writers seem to be leaning towards YA these days. It's definitely the 'in' thing at the moment.

Like you, I write adult fantasy because I like my characters to have to deal with adult decisions. While some of my characters begin life as young adults, the subject matter I like to deal with would definitely be classed as adult fantasy.

Also like you, I read adult books as a teenager, and this is definitely part of the reason why my work falls into this genre.

Regarding your last point, where you mention that a lot of YA readers are adults who are potentially drawn by the simpler writing style, I think you're definitely on to something there. A large proportion of the adult readers of YA books would most likely find the 'hardcore' fantasy writing style heavy going. However the informal chatty tone of most YA books isn't really that far removed from a number of chick lit novels, and even some popular magazines.

That being said, I did really enjoy Twilight. I like good YA, but I'm not really motivated to write in that style.

P.S. Stopped by your blog, it looks great! Say hi to member 384 :D
